Know Your Numbers is a worksite biometric screening program.

It is offered to help UC Davis staff and faculty identify modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as high body mass index (BMI), diabetes hypertension, high total cholesterol, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and more. By identifying modifiable risk factors, the goals of Know Your Numbers are to help individuals prevent CVD and CVD risks, manage already existing CVD risk conditions, and encourage healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors.

The Components of a Screening

When a Know Your Numbers event is being offered by your department or by Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being, you can make an appointment to participate online. An appointment typically will take 45 minutes. During this time, you will be walked through the following stations:

Before the Screening: Participants should fast 8-12 hours for their appointment, staying hydrated only with plain water.

Participant Check-In: Arrive to the screening location to sign in for your appointment. At this time, a staff member or student volunteer will ask if you have fasted for 8 - 12 hours. You will complete a brief health assessment to gather information such as your name, age, job title, current medications, and lifestyle habits.

Blood Pressure: A staff member or student volunteer will measure and record your blood pressure.

Lipid Profile: A staff member or student volunteer will perform a finger stick on you to collect a small sample of your blood for your lipid profile. Your sample will be run through an Alere Cholestech LDX®machine to generate information on your high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose.

Health Education: Join a health educator for a brief consultation about your screening results or other health-related questions you may have. The health educator will be happy to provide tips and resources for you to achieve your health goals and develop healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Departmental Screenings

Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being (SFHWB) encourages department chairs, wellness ambassadors, and employees to request to host Know Your Numbers screenings for their department.

  • How can I request to host a Know Your Numbers event?
  • If you are interested in hosting a Know Your Numbers screening for your department, please email wellbeing@ucdavis.eduPlease note: any requests to host a Know Your Numbers event should be inquired about via email at least 3 months out from the desired event date.
  • What would SFHWB supply and what would our department need to supply?
  • SFHWB can supply the following items:
    > Registration survey and promotional email templates
    > Health questionnaires and check-in forms
    > Blood pressure reading monitor
    > Body weight scale
    > Tape measure for waist circumference
    > Three Alere Cholestech LDX® machines
    > Evidence-based health information handouts
    > Evaluation survey templates
    > Summary of the event and results with de-identified data

    You will need to supply:
    > Alere Cholestech LDX® Lipid Profile•GLU Cassettes (you will need to supply the funds, but SFHWB can assist with ordering)
    > One large room or several medium-sized rooms to accommodate the screening
    > Tables, chairs, and electrical outlets for six stations
    > Healthy food options for participants to break their fast after their lipid profile (optional, but highly recommended)
  • How long is an event and how much does it cost?
  • The length of the event will depend on how many employees you hope to have participate in the screening. Three people can be seen every 15 minutes. That means for a one-hour event 12 participants can be screened, for a two-hour event 24 participants can be screened, for a three-hour event 36 participants can be screened, and so on.

The cost is also dependent on how many employees you hope to have participate. The only required costs are for the Alere Cholestech LDX® cassettes, which are used for the lipid profile. The cost is approximately $25 per cassette per person. A staff member from SFHWB would be happy to assist you in the process to purchase the cassettes.
  • Are there opportunities for a fee waiver or fee reduction?
  • Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being hosts annual Know Your Numbers events, which are open to all UC Davis Staff and Faculty. For this reason, we do not offer multiple options for fee waivers or fee reductions. However, there is an opportunity for some or all of your departmental screening cost to be covered by a grant. All wellness ambassadors from any department are encouraged to apply for annual Wellness Ambassador Mini-Grant in the amount of $500. If approved for this grant, your department’s wellness ambassador can use the funds for any health or wellness related initiative they feel the department would most benefit from, including a departmental Know Your Numbers screening.

If you have questions regarding the cost of departmental screenings or the mini-grant application, please email wellbeing@ucdavis.edu.

Additionally, talk with your primary care physician about free preventive screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and/or Type 2 diabetes. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans are mandated by law to provide preventive services without requiring the patient to pay copayments, coinsurances or deductibles.
