The Chemical and Laboratory Safety Committee (CLSC) is charged with continuously improving and fostering the safety culture at UC Davis. The CLSC evaluates the current state of campus Chemical and Laboratory Safety programs; campus policies and procedures for the safe acquisition, storage, use, and disposal of chemicals; and the implementation of safe laboratory practices.
This evaluation process is exclusive of radiological and biological materials, lasers, and animal use, all of which are covered under the auspices of other committees. The CLSC will assess and improve the following eight program areas of the Laboratory Safety Program:
- Communications with the Research Community;
- Training Programs and Resources;
- Chemical Hygiene Plan/Standard Operating Procedures;
- Laboratory Safety Reviews/Hazard Assessments;
- Laboratory Sustainability Initiatives;
- Facilities Planning and Laboratory Design;
- Hazardous Waste Management; and
- Special Program Areas (e.g., nanotechnology, chemical re-use, and physical hazards).
Additionally, the CLSC will assist in the assessment of hazardous chemicals and laboratory processes which may pose significant risks to the campus community. When such risks are found, the CLSC will develop strategies and policy to mitigate the risks. When an unacceptable level of risk is assessed, the CLSC will direct the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to issue a cease and desist for such activities or chemical use on campus.
