October Wellness Ambassador of the Month | Melissa Bain

Quick Summary

  • "Wellness means self-care, it is not just adding something, but managing your work and home life so that you have time to care for yourself".

How long have you worked at UC Davis?

25 years including my residency.

What does Wellness mean to you?

Wellness means self-care, which encompasses a lot of things and is personal to each individual. It is not just adding something, though, such as meditation or yoga, but managing your work and home life so that you have time to care for yourself.

Why did you become a wellness ambassador?

I was in an administration position, working on many different aspects surrounding senior/4th year veterinary students. Some of the things we introduced were in the area of wellness. This made me realize that there was little done in advocating for staff and faculty well-being.

How long have you been a wellness ambassador?

Three years.

What has been the most rewarding or positive part about your experience thus far?

I enjoy meeting other ambassadors during the monthly meetings that Sanne organizes. I haven't been very active in the past, but it's on my radar now.

What are some challenges you face as a wellness ambassador, especially through the pandemic?

It's difficult seemingly being the only one advocating for well-being, until I meet others in different departments. COVID-19 threw a huge wrench into things, especially since there was little in-person contact.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new wellness ambassadors?

Connect with others in different departments across your school and campus. I've been able to meet a couple of others in the School of Veterinary Medicine, and we've been trying to collaborate together.

Staff and Faculty Health and Well-being aims to build an environment that makes the healthier choice the easier one, while providing staff and faculty with the required support to make UC Davis the healthiest community. How do you feel you have contributed to our mission?

I've tried to promote UC Davis initiatives via email and postings outside of our department office. It is sometimes difficult when work schedules and challenges don't allow for full support for these things.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love spending time with my husband and dog, and our son when he's home from college. I enjoy hiking and biking, even if it's just commuting to work, and love to travel to different places and try new things...especially food!
