UC Davis recognized for its holistic efforts at reducing worker injury

Occupational Health Services recently led efforts on behalf of UC Davis (Davis Campus and UC Davis Health) to become a designated National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Total Worker Health (TWH) Affiliate. This affiliation recognizes UC Davis for its efforts to advance the safety, health, and well-being of its workers.

NIOSH was originally created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, which assures “as far as possible every man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.” The goal of NIOSH’s Total Worker Health (TWH) program is to prioritize a hazard-free work environment for all workers by holistically looking at employee health, well-being and safety, and designing programs capable of reducing work related injuries.

In 2018, UC Davis launched  Healthy UC Davis, which was established as part of the University of California-wide Healthy Campus Initiative, aimed at making  UC Davis the healthiest community in the nation. Our TWH affiliate status further celebrates UC Davis’ strategic and holistic efforts to coordinate all the programs and partners dedicated to employee health and well-being.

“UC Davis is always focused on its workers' health, and our Total Worker Health standing is just another example of our priorities in action,” said Dr. Karega Paisley, Director of Occupational Health Services. “Being a part of the NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate Program is an honor for UC Davis — it’s rewarding and assuring to know that UC Davis is a leader in its commitment to worker safety.”

UC Davis’ TWH affiliate status applies to UC Davis Health and the Davis campus, where almost 30 programs are working together to improve worker safety. In turn, the affiliate status gives the University access to NIOSH resources and training, allows us to contribute to workplace safety research, and could potentially lead to new funding to make UC Davis an even better employer by advancing practical solutions to maintain a productive and healthy workforce.
